Other Prayers

Prepared by Father Yves, March 2007

Heavenly Father, grant us to love others with a steadfast love, not demanding anything from them, but remaining loyal to them, whatever they do, as thou dost remain faithful whether we do good or evil. Grant us patience to see the seed of thy grace bear fruit in its time.

Help us to face the reality of present circumstances, however long they last, with the steadfast faithfulness of the martyrs and confessors who suffered during the seventy years of the Communist Oppression.

Remind us that in the depth of anguish, thou art there. In the brokenness of lives, thou art there. In the torment we inflict on one another, thou art there.

Lord Jesus our God, who bore insults and blows, unfair trial, betrayal of friends, shameful death and descent into hell with perfect faith: grant to us thy Holy Spirit that we too may be faithful.

Most Holy trinity, source of all good things, we confess that throughout our life we have heeded our passions and not thy holy will. Receive our good intention instead of actual good deeds. Grant us true repentance, hatred for sin, and grace to live in purity and righteousness, performing at last thy holy will and not our sinful will. Grant, Lord, that we who are baptised into the death of thy Son, our God and Saviour Jesus Christ, may continually put to death our evil desires. Through death to sin, through the grave and gate of death to our own ego, by the power of thy grace, may we pass to the resurrection and attain to deification.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, Creator of heaven and earth, Saviour of the world, I who am unworthy and of all people the most sinful, I now humbly bow the knee of my heart before the glory of thy majesty and praise thy Cross and Passion. I offer thanksgiving to thee, the King and God of all, that thou wast pleased to bear all temptations, hardships and tortures, becoming our fellow sufferer and helper, the Saviour of all those in sorrow, need and suffering, our Redeemer from cruel bondage to the enemy of the human race. I know that love can only be repaid by love. Therefore I come to thee with my poor prayer for those who are in trouble; those who suffer from hunger or social deprivation; those suffering because of their own irresponsibility; those in bondage to passions, living foolish or criminal lives; those on trial, in prison, justly or unjustly; those who are tortured; those under sentence of death. Almighty, ever-living God of love, show compassion to all thy suffering servants, whatever their spiritual state; bring us all to the fulness of life made available by the power of thy holy Incarnation, death and resurrection; at the prayers of thy most pure Mother and of all thy Saints. Amen.

Order my steps in your word

Order my steps in your word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me. Deliver me from the false accusations of men: so will I keep your precepts. Make your face to shine upon your servant: and teach me your statutes. Let my mouth be filled with your praise, O Lord: that I may sing of your glory and majesty all the day long. O Christ, who bound your apostles in a union of love, and have bound all believing Christians with the same bond, grant us without dissimulation to do your command and love one another. Remember all our brothers and sisters, all human beings throughout the world and grant them your peace and great mercy. Christ the Wisdom of God, lead us to a world of freedom, to your uncreated light, to fearlessness and peace. Holy God, holy mighty, holy immortal, we take refuge in you. May the holy Spirit breathe in us fearlessness and grant us freedom from all fear of friend or foe, of the known and the unknown, by night and by day. For you commanded us that our hearts should not be troubled, you gave us your peace, you gave us your holy Spirit to guide us into all truth. At the protection of your holy Mother, keep us in your peace. Lend an ear, Lord, and answer us, for we are poor and miserable. Look after our souls, for we are your friends, save your servants, for we trust in you. Show us a sign of your favour as we struggle for true repentance. Enable us to grow in the spirit of the prophets, to exercise the faith of the apostles, to win the nobility of the martyrs, to attain the wisdom of our holy fathers and mothers, and to imitate all the virtues of the saints. O designer and creator of the world, give joy to your servants, for to you do we lift up our souls. We surrender everything to you: our whole life, our body and soul, our relatives, especially........., and our friends, especially........... Give us all we need to fulfil the purpose you have for each one of us. grant us all peace, and may serenity always reign in our midst. Accept the struggles of all of us and deepen our sincerity of heart. O God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, as we move, day by day, through the course of our life, help us to reflect on our life and its meaning. The days of each week are like us, runners in a contest, and the goal, a place in eternal life. We are given the opportunity to change ourselves, so that we may attain to the world to come. Help us to fight the good fight and to win the crown of incorruptible life. O Lord and master of our life, we entreat you to look on us who struggle at all times to live by the Spirit. Just as the patriarch Joseph, that athlete of the spirit, found himself in the sandy arena of temptation and did battle with the many-headed enemy, enable us, who languish in the sandbox of childishness and self-will, to persevere in our struggles against ignorance and lack of understanding, so that, by singleness of mind and purity of heart, we may win the crown of spiritual maturity as he did.

Petitions for people in need

We pray thee, O Lord our God, that thou wouldst hearken unto the voice of our supplication. Have mercy on thy servant(s), through thy grace and compassion. Fulfil all his/her/their petitions. Forgive all his/her/their transgressions, whether voluntary or involuntary. Accept his/her/their prayers. Protect him/her/them from all enemies, visible and invisible; from temptation, harm, sorrow and illness. Grant him/her/them health and length of days. Lord, hear and have mercy. Look down, O Master, Lover of mankind, with thy merciful eye. Hear our supplication offered with faith, for thou hast said, ‘all things whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believe that ye shall receive, and it shall be done unto you’, and again, ‘ask, and it shall be given unto you.’ Therefore we, though unworthy, yet hoping in thy mercy, ask: bestow thy kindness upon thy servant(s) ... and fulfil his/her/their good desires; preserve him/her/them all his/her/their days peacefully and calmly in health and length of days. Lord, hear us and have mercy.

O Physician of souls and bodies, with compunction and broken hearts we fall down before thee, and groaning we cry unto thee: heal the sickness, heal the passions of soul and body of thy servant(s), forgive him/her/them all transgressions, voluntary and involuntary, for thou art kindhearted, (raise him/her/them from the bed of sickness), we pray thee, hear and have mercy.

O Lord Jesus Christ our God, accept from us, thine unworthy servants, this fervent supplication. Forgive us all our sins. Hear the painful cry of those who, day and night, suffer tribulation and sorrow. Most merciful God, lead their life out of corruption. grant peace and tranquillity, love and steafastness, and swift reconciliation to thy people, whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious Blood. But unto those who have departed from thee and seek thee not, be thou manifest, that not one of them may perish, but that all of them may be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth, that all may glorify thy most precious Name in oneness of mind and unceasing love, O patient-hearted Lord who art quick to forgive. Lord, hear and have mercy. O thou who dost mercifully hear the prayers of thy servants, manifest thy tender compassion, thy love for mankind, disregard all our iniquities, at the prayers of thy most pure Mother, of thy holy prophet, forerunner and baptist John, of the holy bodiless powers of heaven, of the holy, glorious, all-praised apostles, of the holy hierarchs, martyrs, monastics, healers, and of all thy Saints. O Lord our God, accept this fervent supplication from thy servants; have mercy on us according to the multitude of thy mercies. Send down thy compassion upon us and upon all people who await thy mercy, for thou art a merciful God and thou lovest mankind; and we give glory to thee, to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayers for the Sick

O Saviour, who dost pour thyself utterly like incorruptible chrism to purify the world, have mercy in thy divine loving kindness on thy servant ............free him/her from corruption. Make him/her inaccessible to all adverse powers. Vouchsafe joy and the mercy of thy redemption to thy servant ... Wash away pain and hurt, grant tranquillity, deliver from terror, give strength instead of weakness, trust and confidence instead of doubt and confusion, purity instead of compromise, making him/her a shining temple of thy Holy Spirit.

Most holy, most pure, most gracious ever-virgin Mother of God, steadfast refuge, fortress, haven, wall, ladder leading mankind to heaven, have mercy and show compassion on the servant of God ... for thou didst give birth to him who holds all creation in the hollow of his hand. Amen.

O Physician of souls and bodies, with compunction and broken hearts, we fall down before thee, and groaning we cry unto thee: heal the sicknesses, heal the passions of soul and body of thy servant .... Forgive him/her all transgressions, voluntary and involuntary. Quickly raise him/her up from the bed of sickness, we pray thee: hear and have mercy.

The Six Psalms

Psalm 3

Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! Many are they that rise against me. Many one there be that say of my soul, There is no help for him in his God. But thou, O Lord, art my defender; thou art my worship, and the lifter up of my head. I did call upon the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. I laid me down and slept, and rose up again; for the Lord sustained me. I will not be afraid for ten thousands of the people that have set themselves against me round about. Up, Lord, and help me, O my God, for thou smitest all mine enemies upon the cheek-bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly. Salvation belongeth unto the Lord; and thy blessing is upon thy people. I laid me down and slept, and rose up again; for the Lord sustained me.

Psalm 38

Put me not to rebuke, O Lord, in thine anger; neither chasten me in thy heavy displeasure, for thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore. There is no health in my flesh, because of thy displeasure; neither is there any rest in my bones, by reason of my sin. For my wickednesses are gone over my head, and are like a sore burden, too heavy for me to bear. My wounds stink, and are corrupt, through my foolishness. I am brought into so great trouble and misery, that I go mourning all the day long. For my loins are filled with a sore disease, and there is no whole part in my body. I am feeble and sore smitten; I have roared for the very disquietness of my heart. Lord, thou knowest all my desire, and my groaning is not hid from thee. My heart panteth, my strength hath failed me, and the sight of mine eyes is gone from me. My lovers and my neighbours did stand looking upon my trouble, and my kinsmen stood afar off. They also that sought after my life laid snares for me; and they that went about to do me evil talked of wickedness, and imagined deceit all the day long. As for me, I was like a deaf man, and heard not, and as one that is dumb, who doth not open his mouth. I became even as a man that heareth not, and in whose mouth are no reproofs. For in thee, O Lord, have I put my trust; thou shalt answer for me, O Lord my God. I have required that they, even mine enemies, should not triumph over me; for when my foot slipped, they rejoiced greatly against me. And I truly am set in the plague, and my heaviness is ever in my sight. For I will confess my wickedness, and be sorry for my sin. But mine enemies live, and are mighty; and they that hate me wrongfully are many in number. They also that reward evil for good are against me, because I follow the thing that good is. Forsake me not, O Lord my God; be not thou far from me. Haste thee to help me, O Lord God of my salvation. Forsake me not, O Lord my God; be not thou far from me. Haste thee to help me, O Lord God of my salvation.

Psalm 63

O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee. My soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh also longeth after thee, in a barren and dry land where no water is. Thus have I looked for thee in holiness, that I might behold thy power and glory. For thy loving-kindness is better than the life itself; my lips shall praise thee. As long as I live will I magnify thee on this manner, and lift up my hands in thy Name. My soul shall be satisfied, even as it were with marrow and fatness, when my mouth praiseth thee with joyful lips. Have I not remembered thee in my bed, and thought upon thee when I was waking? Because thou hast been my helper, therefore under the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice. My soul hangeth upon thee; thy right hand hath upholden me. These also that seek the hurt of my soul, they shall go under the earth. Let them fall upon the edge of the sword, that they may be a portion for foxes. But the King shall rejoice in God; all they also that swear by him shall be commended, for the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
Both now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, Glory to thee, O God.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, Glory to thee, O God.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, Glory to thee, O God.
As we say this, we cross ourselves BUT DO NOT BOW
Lord, have mercy, Lord, have mercy, Lord, have mercy.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
Both now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Psalm 88

O Lord God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before thee; O let my prayer enter into thy presence. Incline thine ear unto my calling. For my soul is full of trouble, and my life draweth nigh unto hell. I am counted as one of them that go down into the pit, and I have been even as a man that hath no strength, free among the dead, like unto them that are wounded, and lie in the grave, who are out of remembrance, and are cut away from thy hand. Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in a place of darkness, and in the deep. Thine indignation lieth hard upon me, and thou hast vexed me with all thy storms. Thou hast put away mine acquaintance far from me, and made me to be abhorred of them. I am so fast in prison that I cannot get forth. My sight faileth for very trouble; Lord, I have called daily upon thee, I have stretched forth my hands unto thee. Dost thou show wonders among the dead? or shall the dead rise up again, and praise thee? Shall thy loving-kindness be showed in the grave? or thy faithfulness in destruction? Shall thy wondrous works be known in the dark? and thy righteousness in the land where all things are forgotten? Unto thee have I cried, O Lord, and early shall my prayer come before thee. Lord, why abhorrest thou my soul, and hidest thou thy face from me? I am in misery, and like unto him that is at the point to die; even from my youth up, thy terrors have I suffered with a troubled mind. Thy wrathful displeasure goeth over me, and the fear of thee hath undone me. They came round about me daily like water, and compassed me together on every side. My lovers and friends hast thou put away from me, and hid mine acquaintance out of my sight. O Lord God of my salvatio i have cied day and night before thee: O let my prayer enter into thy presence, incline thine ear unto my calling.

Psalm 103

Praise the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, praise his holy Name. Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgiveth all thy sin, and healeth all thine infirmities, who saveth thy life from destruction, and crowneth thee with mercy and loving-kindness, who satisfieth thy mouth with good things, making thee young and lusty as an eagle. The Lord executeth righteousness and judgement for all them that are oppressed with wrong. He showed his ways unto Moses, his works unto the children of Israel. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy, long-suffering, and of great goodness. He will not always be chiding; neither keepeth he his anger for ever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins, nor rewarded us according to our wickednesses. For look how high the heaven is in comparison of the earth; so great is his mercy also toward them that fear him. Look how wide also the east is from the west; so far hath he set our sins from us. Yea, like as a father pitieth his own children, even so is the Lord merciful unto them that fear him. For he knoweth whereof we are made; he remembereth that we are but dust. The days of man are but as grass; for he flourisheth as a flower of the field. For as soon as the wind goeth over it, it is gone, and the place thereof shall know it no more. But the merciful goodness of the Lord endureth for ever and ever upon them that fear him; and his righteousness upon children’s children; Even upon such as keep his covenant, and think upon his commandments to do them. The Lord hath prepared his seat in heaven, and his kingdom ruleth over all. O praise the Lord, ye angels of his, ye that excel in strength, ye that fulfil his commandment, and hearken unto the voice of his word. O praise the Lord, all ye his hosts, ye servants of his that do his pleasure. O speak good of the Lord, all ye works of his, in all places of his dominion; praise thou the Lord, O my soul; in all places of his dominion; praise thou the Lord, O my soul; in all places of his dominion; praise thou the Lord, O my soul.

Psalm 143

Hear my prayer, O Lord, and consider my desire; hearken unto me for thy truth and righteousness’ sake. And enter not into judgement with thy servant; for in thy sight shall no man living be justified. For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; he hath smitten my life down to the ground; he hath laid me in the darkness, as the men that have been long dead. Therefore is my spirit vexed within me, and my heart within me is desolate. Yet do I remember the time past; I muse upon all thy works. Yea, I exercise myself in the works of thy hands. I stretch forth my hands unto thee; my soul gaspeth unto thee as a thirsty land. Hear me, O Lord, and that soon, for my spirit waxeth faint; hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit. O let me hear thy loving-kindness betimes in the morning; for in thee is my trust. Show thou me the way that I should walk in; for I lift up my soul unto thee. Deliver me, O Lord, from mine enemies; for I flee unto thee to hide me. Teach me to do the thing that pleaseth thee; for thou art my God. Let thy loving Spirit lead me forth into the land of righteousness. Quicken me, O Lord, for thy Name’s sake; and for thy righteousness’ sake bring my soul out of trouble. And of thy goodness slay mine enemies, and destroy all them that vex my soul; for I am thy servant. Hearken unto me in thy righteousness, O Lord, and enter not into judgment with thy servant; Hearken unto me in thy righteousness, O Lord, and enter not into judgment with thy servant. Thy gracious spirit shall direct my paths upon earth.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
As we say this, we cross ourselves BUT DO NOT BOW.
